What the NIN is and why you need it
The National Insurance Number (NIN or NINo) is your British social security number: it tracks your contributions and your taxes. You need it to work legally, and your employer will ask for it — though NOTE: you can START working while you wait for the number, as long as you already have the right to work in the UK.
It's free. If anyone charges you to 'sort out your NIN', it's a scam — you apply directly with the government and no middleman is needed.

What you need before applying
You need the right to work in the UK. You'll be asked for:
- Your passport (or a valid identity document).
- Your immigration status (visa, digital-status share code, or settled/pre-settled status).
- A UK address where you can receive post.

The application, step by step
- 1. Go to GOV.UK and search 'apply for a National Insurance number' (the only official site).
- 2. Complete the online application: personal details, immigration status and address.
- 3. Upload the photos/scans they ask for (passport, and in some cases a photo of you holding it). Some people are asked to attend an in-person identity check.
- 4. You'll receive a confirmation email with a reference number — keep it.
- 5. The NIN arrives by letter to your address, usually within 2 to 8 weeks.
