The newcomer's problem

Traditional British banks tend to ask for 'proof of address' (a bill or official letter in your name)… which you don't have, because you've just arrived. And without a bank account, no one can pay your wages. It's the classic vicious circle — and it has a way out.

Digital banks broke that circle: accounts open from your phone, with a passport, in minutes, with no prior history.

The options that genuinely work with no history

  • Monzo — a full UK account (with sort code and account number), opened with a passport from the app. The favourite for receiving wages from day one.
  • Starling — similar to Monzo, a full UK account and great for day-to-day use; no hidden fees.
  • Revolut — the easiest to open and excellent for multi-currency and sending money, but depending on your plan it may not be a 'full' UK bank account: check your employer can pay you into it without problems.
  • High-street banks (Lloyds, Barclays, HSBC…) — possible, but they usually require proof of address and an appointment; leave them for when you have history, or ask about their 'basic' accounts.

What you need to open the account

  • A valid passport (or BRP/digital status, as applicable).
  • A UK mobile number (a pay-as-you-go SIM will do).
  • For digital apps: a video selfie for verification.
  • You do NOT need a NIN to open the account (though the bank may ask for it later).

Our honest advice

Open a digital account first (Monzo or Starling) so your wages can land right away. Once you have 6-12 months of history and letters in your name, add what you need: a traditional account, a credit card to build your credit score, or a savings account that pays interest.

And a house rule: if we ever place commission links here for DaleLatino, you'll see them clearly labelled — and it will never change which bank we recommend first.
