Spaniards in London

The UK's largest Spanish-speaking community — and sister to the Latin one: 80% of the Latin Americans who arrived via Europe came from Spain. This page is also for you if your passport is Spanish.

Consulate

Consulado General de España en Londres

20 Draycott Place, SW3 2RZ

020 7589 8989

Monday to Friday, 8:15–14:30 — appointment required for everything

💡 Passport appointments are released ONLY on the 1st and 15th of each month — and sell out within hours. You must be enrolled in the Registro de Matrícula Consular. NOTE: the DNI canNOT be processed in London (only in Spain, before the Policía Nacional).

How do I get an appointment to renew my passport?

The trick nobody tells you: appointments are released only on the 1st and 15th of each month and last a couple of hours at most. Prerequisite: enrolment in the Registro de Matrícula Consular (with your number and PIN). The passport takes 3-4 weeks — it's printed in Spain and returns by diplomatic pouch.

Can I renew my DNI at the consulate?

No — the DNI is only issued and renewed in Spain, before the Policía Nacional. What the consulate does issue is the residence certificate you need to renew it in Spain without re-registering as a resident there.

How do I vote from the UK? Is the voto rogado still a thing?

The voto rogado was abolished in 2022 (LO 12/2022): if you're on the CERA roll you receive the paperwork automatically, can download the ballot online, and deposit your vote at the consular ballot box over 7 days or send it by post. The critical bit: keep your details up to date at the consulate.

I'm Latin American with a Spanish passport — is this my consulate?

Yes. If you naturalised as Spanish (in Spain or by treaty), your passport, consular registration and vote are all handled here, at Draycott Place — the same process as any Spaniard. Thousands of Colombians, Bolivians and Ecuadorians in London are in exactly your case.

What is the alta consular and why does it matter so much?

Enrolment in the Registro de Matrícula Consular is the key to nearly everything: without it there's no passport appointment, no CERA to vote, no certificates. If you've just arrived, it's your first Spanish errand.

Post-Brexit: who needs a visa and who doesn't

If you were resident before 31-Dec-2020, your status is the EU Settlement Scheme (pre-settled/settled). Anyone arriving now on a Spanish passport needs a visa like any non-Briton — the passport only grants 6 months as a visitor.
